Seahawks soar over Tufts in conference debut

NEWPORT, R.I.--In a commanding display, the Salve Regina University Seahawks triumphed over the Tufts University Jumbos with a score of 29-5 in their inaugural match of the newly formed North Atlantic Collegiate Rugby Conference. The match, held under rainy skies in Medford, MA, showcased the Seahawks' impressive skill and teamwork.

The first half saw both teams exchanging possessions, with neither side able to find a breakthrough. However, just before halftime, senior Haylee Morrison crossed the try line and slotted the conversion putting Salve ahead 7-0.

As the second half commenced, the Seahawks took control of the match, winning the majority of set pieces and capitalizing on Tufts' penalties. Senior Emily Turcotte, junior Autumn Frost, and sophomore Laura Lozano each added tries, while Morrison contributed another conversion to her tally, leading the team in scoring with a total of 9 points.

Salve's strong performance was complemented by standout individual efforts. Junior Kiara Russin was named Forward of the Match for her relentless play in the pack, while freshman Elsa Mendez earned Back of the Match honors for her contributions defensively.

This victory not only marks a successful start to the season for the Seahawks but also sets a promising tone for their campaign in the new conference. Salve will travel to Smith College on Saturday, september 28, for round two.
