Valiants remain perfect in ECAC with 5-1 win over Salve Regina

Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Sophomore Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored two goals and added an assist to lead Manhattanville College to a 5-1 win over Salve Regina University in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East action Saturday afternoon at St. George's Rink.

The win lifts the Valiants to 6-1-0 on the season and improves them to a perfect 5-0-0 in conference play. Freshman Erin McCullough (Ludlow, Mass.) (right) potted her first-collegiate goal for the Seahawks, who saw their two-game win streak snapped and fell to 2-4-0 (2-3-0 ECAC).

With the game tied at one with less than five minutes remaining in the opening period, Manhattanville struck twice to take a 3-1 lead, one which it would never relinquish. Sophomore Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario) jammed a loose puck past SRU junior goaltender Rebecca Simmons (Averill Park, N.Y.) at 15:44 to put the Valiants in front 2-1, and a power-play marker by Morrison at 18:42 made it 3-1. Second-period markers by sophomores Ella Hubley (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Sonia Pocchionero (Montreal, Quebec) at 11:51 and 19:55, respectively, capped the scoring and improved the Valiants to 20-1-0 all-time against Salve Regina.

"It's hard to get down on these guys. It was nice that when we got behind, we were able to come back and tie it up, but then we fell behind by two and couldn't recover," said Seahawks head coach Michael Cox. "You have to play with the lead against a team as strong as Manhattanville. They came at us hard and I thought we did a good job of matching their intensity. They were just a little hungrier around the net than we were."

Morrison opened the scoring 29 seconds into the contest when she collected a loose puck that ricochet off the pads of Simmons and scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season into an empty net. Just past the midway point of the period, McCullough send a backhander thought the legs of Valiants freshman goalie Mary Evans (Detroit, Mich.) to even the score at one. Senior Kristen Cokely (Cambridge, Mass.) started the play with a pass to classmate Sarah Small (Medfield, Mass.) at the right point. Her shot was knocked down in front and found its way onto the stick of McCullough, who was playing just her second game of the season.

The Valiants outshot the Seahawks 44-15 and went 1-for-2 with the extra skater. Salve Regina, meanwhile, was unable to convert on any of its four PP chances. Simmons finished the night with 39 saves, including 20 in the second period, while Evans stopped 14 shots to earn her second win of the season.

The Seahawks return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Bowdoin for a 7 p.m. contest. The Valiants host Trinity Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
