MANCHESTER, N.H. - The College of St. Scholastica women's ice hockey team scored with just 17 seconds remaining in the third period to defeat Salve Regina University by a score of 4-3 on Saturday at the Saint Anselm Invitational in Manchester, N.H.

After a relatively quiet first period, CSS got on the board one minute into the second period as Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan) scored her second goal in the last 24 hours.

The Seahawks tied the game on a Rachel Porter (Franklin, Mass.) power-play goal at the 12 minute-mark to make it 1-1 at the second intermission.

The teams combined for a total of five goals in the third period. Schlieske scored her first goal of the period with 14 minutes left after a great pass in front by Michelle Fischer (St. Paul, Minn.). Courtney Esse (Cloquet, Minn.) then scored with nine minutes left to extend the Saints' lead to 3-1.

The Seahawks, however, responded with a pair of goals 36 seconds apart in the final five minutes to tie the contest at 3-3. Junior Sarah McCusker (Havertown, Pa.) got the Seahawks back within one score at 15:40 before junior Samantha Zitzer (River Forest, Ill.) and freshman Michaela Chiuccariello (Winchester, Mass.) set up freshman Sarah Markey (Ashland, Mass.) for the game-tying goal.

In the final minute, after a pair of matching minor penalties set up 4-on-4 hockey, Schlieske brought the puck into the Seahawks zone and ripped a slap shot from the point past the goaltender to give the Saints the 4-3 victory.

Shannon Connolly (Toronto, Ontario) earned the win in net for the Saints, stopping 16 shots, while senior Rebecca Simmons (Averill Park, N.Y.) had a game-high 17 saves in the tough loss for Salve Regina (5-4-2).

The Seahawks will be back in action on Tuesday (7 p.m.) at Wesleyan.
