Summary
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Junior defenseman Maddie Cox (Barrington, R.I.) stuffed in a rebound 8:03 into the third to help deliver the Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team a 2-1 comeback victory over Nichols College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday night.
Nichols lone goal came in the first period from Rebecca Taylor (Ridgefield, Conn.), while Nicole Schneiders (Westwood, Mass.) knotted things 1-1 for Salve Regina in the second, before Cox put the Seahawks ahead in the third.
Series and Streaks
The Seahawks improve to 20-6-3 all-time versus Nichols.
Three Stars of the Game
- Salve Regina junior Maddie Cox jammed in a rebound off a shot from Tori Amaral (Glastonbury, Conn.) with 11:53 to go in the third.
- Salve Regina senior Madison Jalbert (Beverly, Mass.) made 23 saves to improve to 1-3 in net on the season.
- Nichols freshman Victoria Bakopanos (Kirkland, Quebec) made a career-high 34 saves in the loss to fall to 2-1 between the pipes.
Turning Point
Salve Regina had the fresher legs in the third period versus the shorthanded Bison. After failing to clear the puck off a shot from the wing, Amaral corralled the loose puck and circled the zone, freeing herself in the slot for a shot that was initially stopped by Bokopanos, but Cox was waiting on the doorstep and jammed in the loose puck to put the Seahawks on top 2-1. After that the Seahawks were content to force the Bison to chase the puck and kill time. A Bison penalty with 2:09 remaining all but sealed the game as they were unable to get a chance to pull the goalie and the Seahawks walked away with their first victory of the season.
Quick Hits
- Salve Regina outshot the Bison 36-24, 30-12 in the second and third periods.
- Both teams went 0-for-2 on the powerplay.
